The right dimensions, fabrics that survive the climate and properly layered lighting: the method we apply for our clients in Ivory Coast.
Start with dimensions, not with style
The first mistake in a modern living room is buying a sofa that is too big for the room. Measure the main wall and subtract at least 60 cm on each side: that is the maximum comfortable width for your seating.
Allow 80 cm of circulation between sofa and coffee table, and 2.5 to 3 metres between the seat and the television. Those three numbers prevent 90% of bad purchases.
Materials chosen for the climate
Heat, humidity and sea air quickly damage poorly chosen furniture. Prefer water-repellent, breathable fabrics over thick velvet, high-density foams that keep their shape, and treated solid wood frames rather than chipboard.
In exposed rooms, full-grain leather ages far better than faux leather, which cracks under heat after two or three seasons.
Lighting, the detail that changes everything
A single ceiling light flattens the room. Combine three sources: a central or linear pendant, a wall lamp or floor lamp near the seating, and low accent lighting for the evening.
Aim for 2,700 to 3,000 K: the light stays warm and flatters beige, wood and brass tones.
Build a coherent palette
Three colours are enough: a light base (ivory, sand), a deep colour (black, forest green, terracotta) and a metallic accent (gold brass). Split them 60 / 30 / 10.

Realistic budget and lead times
For a complete quality living room (sofa, coffee table, TV unit, rug, lighting), plan an overall budget rather than buying piece by piece: consolidated shipping sharply reduces the cost per item.
