Choosing the right chandelier for your dining room

The right height above the table

Hang the fixture 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop. Lower, and it blocks sight lines; higher, and it lights the ceiling instead of your guests.

For ceilings above 3 metres, add roughly 8 cm per additional metre.

Getting the diameter or length right

For a round table, choose a chandelier with a diameter of half to two thirds of the table. For a rectangular table, a linear model about two thirds of its length gives the best balance.

Above a kitchen island, two or three evenly spaced pendants work better than one single piece.

Glass, brass or matte black?

Clear glass visually lightens a busy room. Opal glass diffuses soft light, ideal above a table. Gold brass warms beige and wood interiors; matte black adds structure to light schemes.
