Bedroom colours: creating a genuinely restful room

A restful bedroom comes down to three things: a desaturated palette, a well-sized headboard and low lighting.
Desaturate rather than lighten
Calming colours are not necessarily light — they are low in saturation. A deep blue-grey rests the eye more than pure white, which throws hard light back at you on waking.
2026 bedroom palettes revolve around soft blues, greyed lavender, linen and whites nuanced with beige. Sage green also works beautifully with light wood.
The headboard sets the scale
A full-height upholstered headboard dresses the wall and replaces wall decoration. Allow the bed width plus 20 to 30 cm on each side for an enveloping effect.
It is also the best place for the secondary colour: green velvet, sand linen or deep blue fabric against neutral walls.
Textiles, mattress and real comfort
In hot climates, favour cotton and washed linen over synthetic blends: they breathe and age better.
The mattress is not chosen by the colour of the bed: pocket springs for ventilation and two-person support, memory foam for single sleeping. Add a breathable mattress protector.
Storage and circulation
Keep 70 cm of passage on each side of the bed and 90 cm in front of a hinged wardrobe. Below that, the room becomes uncomfortable however beautiful it is.
A sliding wardrobe in the same shade as the walls visually disappears and enlarges the room; a contrasting one becomes a piece of furniture in its own right and must join the palette.
Lighting: low and warm
Remove the single ceiling light. Two wall lights either side of the bed, one low lamp and, ideally, a dimmer are enough.
Stay at 2,700 K and avoid any cool light in a bedroom: it delays falling asleep.
